Background of the study
TikTok lipsync videos have emerged as a transformative force in Nigerian phonetic articulation. These videos, which combine visual performance with audio mimicry, encourage users to experiment with pronunciation, intonation, and accent modification. Nigerian TikTok users frequently adapt global trends to local contexts, blending traditional phonetic features with innovative vocal styles (Adebayo, 2023). The dynamic, creative nature of lipsync performances not only entertains but also reshapes conventional speech patterns. As users manipulate audio through deliberate mispronunciations, exaggerated enunciation, and playful voice modulation, a new phonetic repertoire evolves that reflects both digital culture and indigenous linguistic heritage (Ibrahim, 2024). This study examines the phonetic variations induced by TikTok lipsync videos and explores how these trends contribute to the broader evolution of Nigerian speech. By analyzing the articulatory techniques employed in these videos, the research aims to reveal the interplay between digital media, cultural identity, and phonetic innovation, thus offering a comprehensive understanding of modern language change in Nigeria (Okeke, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the popularity of TikTok lipsync videos, there is limited research on their impact on phonetic articulation in Nigeria. Existing studies have largely focused on visual trends or general digital communication, neglecting the auditory dimension. This gap in research prevents a clear understanding of how digital performance influences pronunciation and accent. The study seeks to address this deficiency by systematically analyzing phonetic features in TikTok lipsync videos and evaluating their implications for Nigerian phonetics (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the role of viral social media trends in transforming phonetic articulation in Nigeria. The findings will contribute to our understanding of digital language evolution and provide insights for linguists, educators, and media practitioners (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses solely on TikTok lipsync videos in Nigeria and their impact on phonetic articulation. It does not extend to other forms of digital media or offline speech practices.
